Physiology

GOAL

The broad goal of the teaching of undergraduate students in physiology aims at providing the student comprehensive knowledge of the normal functions of the organ systems of the body to facilitate an understanding of the physiological basis of health and diseases.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE

  • At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
  • Describe the normal functions of all the organ systems, their regulatory mechanisms and interactions of the various systems for well-coordinated total body function.
  • Understand the relative contribution of each organ system in the maintenance of the milieu interior (homeostasis).
  • Explain the physiological aspects of normal growth and development. Analyze the physiological responses and adaptation to environmental stresses.
  • Comprehend the physiological principles underlying pathogenesis and treatment of disease.
  • Correlate knowledge of physiology of human reproductive system in relation to National Family Welfare Program.

SKILL

  • At the end of the course the student shall be able to :
  • Conduct experiments designed for study of physiological phenomena.
  • Interpret experimental/investigative data.
  • Distinguish between normal & abnormal data derived as a result of tests which he/she has performed and observed in the laboratory.

INTEGRATION

At the end of the integrated teaching the student shall acquire an integrated knowledge of organ structure and function and its regulatory mechanisms. Horizontal and vertical Integrated teaching is conducted regularly to provide detailed knowledge about various physiological systems and biological processes. Cell , hepatic system, coronary circulation, thyroid gland ,etc. topics were taught by Horizontal Integration.

Physiology is the science of life. Human Physiology studies organization, functions and regulation of various organ systems in the human body. Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Renal, Gastrointestinal, Endocrine, Reproductive and Central Nervous System are the major functional systems. Each of them has special functions important for life. All of them synchronize their functions in order to maintain ‘Homeostasis’; the state of physiological equilibrium. Deviation from this equilibrium is a day to day phenomenon and body restores the normalcy by various regulatory mechanisms. Sometimes, it fails to do so by internal or external reasons and we call it an illness or disease. So, to understand the disease process, principles of diagnosis and treatment comprehensive understanding of physiology is a must for medical students and professionals.
To make this task more interesting and informative, Department of Physiology has four specious and well equipped laboratories. The state of the art Hematology laboratory is equipped with microscopes, hemocytometers, hemoglobinometers blood grouping and Rh typing facility, centrifuge machines and required staining facilities for study of the blood components and cells.

Amphibian laboratory is available in the premises of department. The experiments on the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system enable students to understand various principles of these systems. To facilitate in-depth knowledge of students, the amphibian lab is having charts, dissection facility, kymographs, electronic stimulators, computers for showing the simulations and various apparatus required for performing amphibian experiments.
Mammalian laboratory is equipped with big and small dissection tables, big kymographs, respiratory pump, oxygen and carbon dioxide cylinders, required reagents and chemicals to perform the animal experiments.
The spacious, well illuminated and well ventilated clinical laboratory provides an opportunity to the medical students to get accustomed with clinical examination of the human subjects. Here students can learn the art and science of clinical examination. Laboratory is equipped with sufficient number of examination couches. Sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes and ECG machine for examination of cardiovascular system, spirometers, stethography machine for respiratory system examination , adequate facility as Amphibian laboratory is available in the premises of department. Examination of four special senses Hearing, vision, taste and smell can also be learned using various instruments available in this laboratory
Research lab- Research is an inevitable part of postgraduate research and keeping onself updated at the same time contribute ever-changing scientific knowledge. Department have an equipped Research lab to conduct research by UG/PG students and Staff member.

As a result the department have almost 36 reaerch publication in various national and international Indexed Journals.

Animal House

Yes, under Department of pharmacology, we use computerized simulation to teach Amphibian physiology to undergraduate and post graduate students.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

  • Student Seminars
  • Vertical and Horizontal integrated teaching
  • Small group teaching
  • Periodic CMEs

Recently Department of Physiology conducted a one day CME on “Physiology of Stress Relaxation” in which the physiological basis of stress and the stress relaxation techniques were elaborated to the audience. This activity was hosted by department of physiology in collaboration with Department of Psychology of GMC Latur. This CME was accredited by Maharashtra Medical Council,Mumbai and 2 credit points were awarded to participants.
